Sound as Validation (not vibes)
What “emotion can be engineered” means in practice
I do sound for films, VR experiences and also wellness work, but in all these cases I don’t treat it as “simple sound content.”
👉 I treat it as a validation lab.
For one claim:
✅ Emotion can be engineered and measured.
In hospitals, clinics, and also films and narrative XR, that matters because you’re borrowing someone’s nervous system.
If you can’t predict what the audio is doing, you’re guessing with a body.
So the wellness workflow is intentionally unromantic:
Define the target state (calm, focus, recovery)
Define constraints (tempo, density, harmonic behavior, timbre palette)
Test with proxies (breathing changes, muscle tension, debrief language)
Iterate until the outcome is reliable, not accidental
This isn’t about reducing art to numbers. It’s about removing magical thinking from design.
Because if you can’t describe the mechanism, you can’t improve it.
A question: If your audio is meant to calm, what is the first constraint you should tighten: density, rhythm, harmony, or timbre?
Best wishes,
Billy.
